RIO IN RED AND BLUE

Morten Ankarfeldt has for a long time established himself as a high-in-demand bassist on the Danish jazz scene. But on his latest release, his first as a leader, he has reached far beyond the Danish Kingdom and has joined forces with Caio Marcio Dos Santos who is considered to be one of Brazil’s most promising guitar talents.

Together they lead a group of some of Rio de Janeiro’s best musicians on an album that shows that the combination of Nordic melodies and Brazilian rhythms are far more natural coming out of the speakers than being described in a review.

Morten Ankarfeldt’s upright bass and Caio Marcio’s acoustic guitar naturally take up most of the place on the album. Morten plays with mellow authority which benefits from getting placed forward in the mix, whereas Caio is commanding the guitar with South American passion. They complement each other beautifully, and despite widely different backgrounds they sound like a natural team on both Marcio’s graceful arrangement of K-Ximbinhos “Eu Quero é Sossego” and Ankarfeldt’s version of “Man Binder Os På Mund Og Hånd”.
The intense South American touch on Rio Em Vermelho e Azul ensure energetic drums and percussion when called for and a strong drive throughout the album.

Rio Em Vermelho e Azul offers musical cocktails for consumption in steamy jazz bars somewhere with completely different temperatures than back home. A powerfully arranged and performed record that unites two cultures, and with the added bonus of bringing the guitar to the front in ways we are not traditionally accustomed to.
